The New York Giants made a massive financial commitment to Daniel Jones in the 2023 offseason, demonstrating their confidence in him as the long-term franchise quarterback. Just one offseason later, the Giants’ front office has now spent months evaluating potential options to replace Jones.
Jones, one of the highest-paid NFL players, experienced a breakout season in 2022. Behind career-highs in passing yards (3,205), Success rate (45.7 percent), QBR (62.9) and passer rating (92.5), the Giants made the playoffs. He also blossomed as a runner in Brian Daboll’s system, racking up 708 rushing yards with 7 touchdowns in 16 games.

New York rewarded him with a lucrative four-year contract the following offseason, which resulted in Saquon Barkley receiving the franchise tag. However, Jones regressed this past season and missed time with a neck injury before suffering a season-ending ACL tear in November.
Late in the 2023 season, the Giants’ front office began scouting the 2024 quarterback class. Once the offseason began it then pursued Russell Wilson and Drew Lock in NFL free agency, eventually signing Lock. Even with a quality backup behind Jones, New York has still been tied to the top quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Will the Giants keep Daniel Jones?
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants’ interest in finding a potential successor to Jones isn’t necessarily about his play as a quarterback last season. Instead, per the Giants’ reporter, the team is considering a long-term replacement because of Jones’ injury history.

The talent evaluation on Jones reportedly hasn’t changed much over the past year, but the organization now has far more concerns about the quarterback’s longevity and durability moving forward. As a result, it has considered moving up for someone like Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy.
With quarterbacks expected to be taken with the first three picks in the 2024 NFL Draft and the Minnesota Vikings favored to move into the top five for McCarthy, it still seems unlikely that New York will take a quarterback in the first round. However, it’s evident that the Giants aren’t committed to Jones long-term right now and another injury this fall could jeopardize his future with the team.
