The New York Giants thought they found their head coach for the future after the 2022 season, with Brian Daboll helping snap the franchise’s five-year playoff drought. One season later, the NFL Coach of the Year in 2022 could now be on the hot seat.

Things looked promising for New York just one year ago. Daboll was the reigning NFL Coach of the Year, quarterback Daniel Jones signed a contract extension after a breakout year and the Giants’ offense seemed to be headed in the right direction. Regression hit hard in 2023.

Even before finishing the year 6-11, placing third in the NFC East, reports emerged of friction on the Giants coaching staff. Daboll parted ways with defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and two other assists in an ugly split and rumors began surfacing about Daboll’s coaching style not meshing well with the locker room or his staff in January.

As New York’s front office now considers a quarterback change, turning the page on Jones and moving up for one of the best quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft, the pressure seems to be mounting on the Giants’ coach.

According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Dabol may be facing “real pressure” to put together a turnaround season for New York in 2024. If he fails to do so, after already making changes to his coaching staff and facing criticisms over his abrasive coaching style, he could be the next to go.

“Daboll’s overhaul of half of his staff amid strained relationships has league sources viewing him as being under real pressure to get things turned around next season.”

Turning 49 years old in April, Daboll was highly-regarded around the league for his work as the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator. He earned AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020 and was viewed as someone instrumental in the development of quarterback Josh Allen.

If expectations aren’t met in 2024, even if New York brings in a rookie quarterback, it’s very possible the Giants move on from Daboll. The 2025 NFL coaching carousel will feature Mike Vrabel, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and a variety of other top candidates who could all be viable options to replace Daboll a year from now.
