Young Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love is expected to sign a massive contract extension before the 2024 season gets going in September.

Love, 25, has one more year remaining on his current contract and can hit NFL free agency next March. After a stellar first season as their starter, the Packers don’t want it to come to that.

It’s all about finding a happy medium. Obviously, Love is underpaid in the grand scheme of things. His cap hit for next season is a mere $12.76 million.

We’re now hearing a somewhat surprising report on how contract talks are going between Love and his Packers. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reports that it’s a matter of “when”, not “if” Love becomes one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media expanded on his colleague’s report, indicating that Love’s new deal will enter the territory of Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow. That is to say, $55 million per season. Burrow became the highest-paid player in league history after signing an extension with Cincinnati last offseason.

  • Jordan Love stats (2023): 64% completion, 4,159 yards, 32 TD, 11 INT

An extension of this ilk would be somewhat risky for Green Bay given Love’s lack of experience. He’s started all of 18 games since the Packers made him a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

But the quarterback market is going to dictate things in this regard. Love was great in his first season replacing Aaron Rodgers under center in 2023. He led Green Bay to a surprise playoff appearance, looking every bit the part of a franchise guy. The Utah State product will soon get paid like it.
