With a couple days to go before the start of training camp, Davante Adams relationship with the Green Bay Packers could potentially be headed in the right direction.
Fresh off reports that Green Bay has agreed to a contract restructure with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers comes this piece of information from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The NFL insider notes that Adams is now willing to go back to the negotiating table after extension talks were broken off earlier in July.
“With Aaron Rodgers expected to return to Green Bay while giving the Packers more cap room, Davante Adams now is willing to listen to any contract discussions the team would like to have, per sources. Adams open to a deal,” Schefter reported.
There’s certainly a whole lot of moving parts. Obviously, Rodgers’ restructure plays a role here. It will create more cap room for the Packers as they attempt to navigate the finances of extending Adams, who is set to become a free agent following the 2021 season.
Potential Davante Adams contract extension
Adams, 28, is currently playing under a mere four-year, $58 million contract he signed with Green Bay back in 2017. Said deal has Adams as the 18th highest-paid wide receiver in terms of average annual salary. Yeah, he’s vastly underpaid.
Any new deal would likely net Adams north of $20 million annually, especially given his recent performance. Last season alone, the former Fresno State star recorded 115 receptions for 1,374 yards and a league-high 18 touchdowns. He also caught a resounding 77.2% of his targets. Looking at deals around the NFL, we can come to somewhat of a conclusion regarding what Davante Adams might net on a new contract.
NFL wide receiver contracts (average annual salary)
- DeAndre Hopkins, Arizona Cardinals: $27.25 million
- Julio Jones, Tennessee Titans: $22 million
- Keenan Allen, Los Angeles Chargers: $20.23 million
- Amari Cooper, Dallas Cowboys: $20 million
- Michael Thomas, New Orleans Saints: $19.25 million
There’s a chance that Adams and the Packers come to terms on a short-term extension. If so, the $27.25 million Hopkins is earning in Arizona makes sense.
If the Pro Bowler wants a long-term deal with more guarantees, the $22 million recently-acquired Tennessee Titans wide receiver Julio Jones is earning is likely the starting-off point.
