There is a strong chance that Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson will be released here within the next few weeks ahead of NFL free agency opening.
Wilson, 35, was surprisingly benched late in his second season with Denver as the team attempted to limit the injury guarantees on the quarterback’s contract. At that point, it became a foregone conclusion that he’d be released.
With everything pretty much in a holding pattern as the situation plays out, Wilson talked recently about whether he wants to remain with the Broncos. His take was rather interesting.
“I’ve got more fire than ever, honestly, especially over the past two years of what I’ve gone through,” Russell Wilson said, via ESPN’s Jeff Legwold. “Whether it’s in Denver or somewhere else, I hope it’s in Denver, I hope I get to finish there. I committed there, I wanted to be there. I want to be there.”
After struggling in his first season with the Broncos, Wilson was much better from a statistical perspective this past year. He completed 66% of his passes with 3,070 yards while throwing 26 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions.

In addition to perceived issues with head coach Sean Payton, finances will end up playing a role in Wilson’s departure from Denver.
He’s set to count $35.4 million against the cap in 2024. If Denver releases him outright, it would incur an $85 million dead cap hit. Releasing Wilson with a post-June 1 designation would result in a $35.4 million dead cap hit in 2024.
As for the Broncos, moving off Wilson would lead to a major hole under center. Payton is said to be high on a specific prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft. Denver boasts the 12th selection in the first round of the annual event.
