A new report from a leading MLB insider claims the New York Mets have every intention of getting into a bidding war to make Juan Soto’s tenure with the New York Yankees a one-and-done scenario.

This offseason went very differently for the Mets and Yankees. Both teams were huge disappointments in 2023 and needed to upgrade their rosters if they hope to contend for playoff spots this season. While the Pinstripes did not land the ace they were hoping for they still made impact additions in All-Stars Marcus Stroman and Juan Soto.

Unfortunately, the Mets did not sign or trade for any players expected to boost their chances for a big season in 2024. However, it seems many around the organization already have their sites set on changing that by chasing the top free agent this winter, and he happens to currently be on the Yankees.

Juan Soto stats (2023): .275 AVG, .410 OBP, .519 SLG, 35 HR, 109 RBI, 97 R

Earlier this week, ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney spilled the team about what he heard at Mets spring training during a recent visit.

“The most interesting thing heard at Mets’ camp yesterday — and it’s not surprising, given that the [Max] Scherzer contract (and others) will melt off their payroll next winter — is that they fully intend to take a run at Juan Soto next winter,” Olney wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Despite being traded to the Yankees and seeming quite happy in his new surroundings, the three-time All-Star will test his value on the open market after the season. He is expected to land a deal close to half a billion dollars in MLB free agency.

The New York Mets payroll will drop from $290 million to $155 million after this season (via SpotRac).
