Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was carted off the field during Thursday’s training camp practice. The former No. 1 pick from LSU was seen holding his calf late in practice before trainers checked on him.
According to Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Burrow was ultimately carted off the field. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor noted after practice that it was a calf strain for Burrow.
This apparent injury comes at a time when Burrow and the Bengals are in conversations regarding a potentially historic contract extension. The former Heisman winner is set to enter the fifth-year option on his rookie deal worth $29.5 million.
The expectation for some time has been that Burrow would receive the largest contract for a player in NFL history after fellow 2020 draft mate Justin Herbert inked a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Chargers earlier in the week.
Joe Burrow stats (2022): 68.3% completion, 4,475 yards, 35 TD, 12 INT
Back in Week 11 of his rookie season, Burrow suffered a torn ACL, MCL and PCL during a game against the Washington Football Team. He missed the remainder of the season but was able to lead Cincinnati to a surprise Super Bowl appearance as a sophomore the following season.
As for this most-recent injury, videos show the play in question that saw Burrow go down.
As you can see, it appears to be a non-contact injury that forced Burrow to a cart to end practice. The good news is that this is unlikely to force Burrow from any regular season action. However, he’ll likely sit out the full preseason slate.
