Stroud and Will Anderson were taken in the top three. Pair that with the arrival of head coach DeMeco Ryans and you’ve got a lot of reasons for fans to be excited for the first time in several years.

Houston Texans training camp storylines
DeMeco Ryans returns to Houston, looks to make his early mark
The moment it became clear Lovie Smith wasn’t sticking around in Houston, fans wanted DeMeco Ryans. With the San Francisco 49ers, he was one of the best defensive coordinators n football, praised for his leadership and a great teacher for young players. Plus, he knew everything about the Texans’ organization and what it needed to be relevant in the NFL.

Ryans brought an intriguing coaching staff with him to Houston. Bobby Slowik was excellent as the San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator, quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson is a rising name in NFL circles and defensive coordinator Matt Burke in an excellent assistant. Fans aren’t expecting Ryans and his staff to fix the Texans’ issues in a day or even a year. However, training camp will offer a glimpse into how players respond to Ryans and a first-hand look at the head coach in action can inspire confidence for the future.
All eyes on C.J. Stroud, Will Anderson Jr
Instead of taking just one of C.J. Stroud or Will Anderson Jr, Houston traded significant capital including its 2024 first-round pick to secure both. It was a bold move that will have lasting ramifications for the franchise and puts pressure on both players to perform early.

The early buzz out of Texas on Stroud is positive and Anderson Jr. was always viewed as a polished edge rusher. While Davis Mills will receive some first-team reps in training camp, Stroud is a pro-ready quarterback and expected to start in Week 1. However, training camp will be an opportunity to see if Stroud and Anderson Jr. are special talents or simply good players with moderate potential. Whatever happens, it will say a lot about the Texans’ future.
Expectations of second-year leap for Derek Stingley Jr
The Texans chose Derek Stingley Jr. over Sauce Gardner with the third pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Gardner earned first-team All-Pro honors as a rookie and is now viewed as the best cornerback in the NFL. As for Stingley Jr, he graded as the 111th-best cornerback by Pro Football Focus, allowing 414 receiving yards and struggling as a run defender.

Houston has a problem if he replicates anything close to that this fall. Fortunately, the reports from the spring were very positive and many around the NFL view Stingley Jr. among the 2023 NFL breakout candidates. A schematic change and a new coaching staff is just what Stingley Jr. needed. Now, we get to find out if the Texans have a star or if they made an all-time mistake.
Veteran arrivals being counted on to step up
Many focused on the Texans’ moves in the NFL Draft this offseason, but Houston did a lot more than that. It signed wide receiver Robert Woods, tight end Dalton Schultz and running back Devin Singletary to bolster the depth and supporting cast around Stroud. In addition, the Texans provided Ryans with some help for his defense in the form of signing defensive back Jimmie Ward, defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway, edge rusher Chase Winovich, defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins along with linebacker Denzel Perryman and corner Shaquill Griffin.
While none of these players are going to become stars in Houston, depth and experience matter. The investments in the defensive line should help address one of the worst run defenses in football last season. The Shaq Mason trade will help protect Stroud and the complementary players added will provide versatility throughout the season. As for training camp itself, one-on-one drills and team reps will be a lot more competitive than in previous seasons.
