A prominent NFL insider believes that in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys could seriously consider taking Dak Prescott’s replacement as contract extension talks remain at a stalemate.
Since the Dallas Cowboys are cash-strapped and were unable to make big moves in free agency, the biggest story this offseason has been the future of star quarterback Dak Prescott. Before the season ended, owner and general manager Jerry Jones made it seem like the QB getting a contract extension was but a formality. Especially since a new deal could have given them a little cap flexibility.

However, as the offseason has played out, and rumors alleged Prescott is looking for record-breaking money, Jones has started to seem resistant to a new deal and is seemingly willing to let the three-time All-Star play out the final year of his contract. However, a new layer was added to the growing drama on Wednesday.
During an appearance on “NFL Live,” ESPN league insider Adam Schefter opened the door further to this being Prescott’s last season in Big D.
“What are they going to do at quarterback if they lose Dak? That’s interesting,” Schefter openly pondered. “And that’s why I think the Cowboys might be a sleeper team in the quarterback market during the draft because, at some point in time, they might have to draft a quarterback. Higher than you think, because Dak is going into the last year of the contract, and it might be time to get someone in there to start grooming him.”
If the Dallas Cowboys do take the bold step of drafting a signal-caller next week, here are three players they could target in the event that kicks off on April 25.
3 QBs the Dallas Cowboys could take in the 2024 NFL Draft
Bo Nix, Oregon
Bo Nix is the fifth-best QB on many NFL Draft boards and could be available when the Cowboys make their first pick at No. 24. The Oregon star has some work to do with his footwork and reading progressions, however, he has an NFL-ready arm and is a smart player who limits his mistakes. If developed correctly he could be a future star in the league.
Michael Pratt, Tulane
If the Cowboys did not want to rock the boat too much and feel that Trey Lance may be an in-house replacement for Dak Prescott, a backup option could be Tulane star Michael Pratt. The big knock against the four-year starter is he lacks a big arm, however, he is very fundamentally sound and has a great touch for a prospect.
Jordan Travis, Florida State
If the ‘Boys wanted to take a chance on day three of the NFL Draft, Florida State star Jordan Travis would be a fascinating option. He had a big year in 2022 and maintained that high level of play last season. Unfortunately, a season-ending leg fracture and fundamental work have likely scared off some teams from taking him earlier in the draft.
While he is a bit of a project, he is a fantastic athlete with a high upside due to his unique intangibles, especially when plays fall apart. He is a perfect player to use a late pick on and develop over the next year.
