Iowa’s Caitlin Clark breaks another NCAA record on her road to college basketball GOAT status

Iowa Hawkeyes superstar Caitlin Clark already has a resume worthy of being the top pick in the next WNBA Draft, however, before she is done in the college ranks she is likely to own many NCAA records and she added another impressive achievement to her resume on Sunday.

Over the last couple of years, women’s college basketball has seen a notable uptick in interest around the country. Last year’s women’s NCAA tournament earned some of the highest ratings in the event’s history and it is not a coincidence that it coincided with the rise of the Iowa women’s basketball team and top star Caitlin Clark.

If you didn’t know Clark before last year’s March Madness, there is a good chance you may be familiar with her now. The 21-year-old took the sport by storm with a legendary performance in the team’s run to the championship game.

During the tourney, she posted the first-ever 40-point triple-double in a win over Louisville. During that victory, she also became the first Division-1 player to post over 900 points and 300 assists in a single season. She then followed that up with another 40-point outing against defending champion South Carolina in the Final Four.

By the time she was done in the tournament, she passedย Sheryl Swoopes’ decades-long record for most points (191) ever in March Madness.

Yet, while she made herself a household name earlier this year, the Iowa superstar hasn’t taken her foot off the gas as she hopes to bring the program its first national championship next spring. Sunday offered up another resume-bolstering moment as she broke a long-lasting NCAA record.

Caitlin Clark adds another record en route to being NCAA basketball GOAT

In the Hawkeyes 113-90 win over Drake yesterday, Caitlin Clark posted her 39th 30-point game of the season, which broke Kelsey Plum’s DI record. Furthermore, the performance was another showcase of the all-around talent she is as she also tallied 10 assists, six rebounds, and seven steals to go along with her 35 points on the night.

While a case could be made that she is already the greatest female athlete in college basketball history — or moving into the debate — she now is closing in on consideration to be seen as one of the greatest of all time for any gender.

In scoring 30 points for the 39th time on Sunday, Clark is now two away from passing Antoine Davis’ 40-game record that he set with Detroit last season.

What also makes Clark’s run at Iowa so spectacular, is that she isn’t posting most of her outstanding stats against weak teams. Clark has averaged 29.6 points per game against top-10 opponents during her career (per ESPN Stats & Info). And her most recent 30-point outing came in the team’s season opener when she dropped 44 points against then-eighth-ranked Virginia Tech.

If Caitlin Clark can stay healthy and top Davis’ record, the next big number to fall would be the all-time points record of 3,527, which is also held by Plum and is very much in striking distance for the Iowa star.
