In an attempt to add more depth to their rushing attack, the Buffalo Bills are reportedly close to signing a six-year NFL veteran who has run for over 1,000 yards twice during their career.
The Buffalo Bills have gotten off to a good but not great start to their 2023 campaign. They head into a Week 7 game against rivals the New England Patriots with a 4-2 record and a game out of first place. They have one of the better defenses in the league — although they are battling serious injury issues — and quarterback Josh Allen has led an effective passing attack.

Unfortunately, for another season the team’s run game has not been near the level of the defense and air attack. Heading into this weekend, Allen is again their second-leading rusher, and starting running back James Cook has run for over 100 yards just once this season.
While their run game is not among the worst in the NFL, it is not where it needs to be so they can be a serious Super Bowl contender later this year.
Buffalo Bills reportedly close to signing Leonard Fournette
That is probably why the organization is reportedly looking to improve the position in free agency this week. On Monday night, Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz revealed that “Leonard Fournette tells me he is visiting the Bills tomorrow. Fournette has fielded interest from several teams, and there’s a good chance he signs in Buffalo if all goes well.”
- Leonard Fournette stats (2022): 189 rushes, 668 yards, 9 touchdowns, 3.5 yards per carry
Fournette has remained on the sidelines this season as he waits for the right opportunity to commit to in 2023. He played in a featured role over the last three years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including in their championship season in 2020. However, his best years came during his tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
In two of those three seasons, he rushed for over 1,000 yards and posted a nine-touchdown season during his rookie year in 2017.
