The Boston Celtics are fresh off winning the NBA Finals, pushing them past the Los Angeles Lakers for the most championships in the NBA with 18. Some might think the Celtics’ profound success would mean the franchise would be under no consideration to be sold, but that isn’t the case here.
Sam Grousbeck purchased the team back in 2002 for just $360 million. Yet, the family announced their intent to sell the franchise last June. Today, that sales process got completed.

Boston Celtics sell for $6.1 billion, more than any NFL team

According to several NBA sources, the Boston Celtics franchise has been purchased by Bill Chisholm, who is a managing partner of Symphony Technology Group.
The biggest headliner here, aside from the Celtics being sold, is that Chisholm is paying $6.1 billion. It’s a record-setting amount, not just among NBA franchises, but it’s also more than any NFL franchise has ever been sold for. In fact, this is the largest sports franchise sale in North American history.
The NFL’s Washington Commanders were sold for a then-record $6.05 billion in 2023, but this mark suggests the next NFL team that gets sold will go for even more.
While the sale is expected to go through, Wyc Grousbeck is still expected to be the governor of the team until 2028. This is because the sale is expected to be done in stages, with the “balance” of the deal closing in 2028.
The Celtics have won two NBA championships under the Grousbeck’s ownership, helping the franchise sustain it’s status as one of the most iconic sports organizations in the world.
