The countdown to the FedEx Cup playoffs continues with one month remaining before the FedEx St. Jude Championship kicks off for the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings.
This week, the PGA Tour has two highly-anticipated tournaments. The PGA Tour’s primary event is across the Atlantic Ocean for the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland.
The other PGA Tour event is the Barbasol Championship on the Champions Course at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, which is south of Lexington. Â
Last week, Sepp Straka won the John Deere Classic after shooting 23-under par through the final three rounds despite shooting +2 and tying for 133rd through the first 18 holes. Straka even had an opportunity for a 59 but settled for a 9-under 62 during the final round as a result of a double bogey on his final hole. Â
This week’s journey to The Renaissance Club is a co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour. Nearly 75 professionals on the DP World Tour are teeing it up with the PGA Tour players this week.
With the Open Championship taking place next at Royal Liverpool, this is a great opportunity for the top players, especially on the PGA Tour, to adjust to playing a links style course and the different grasses in Scotland, compared to the grasses used in the United States.
Xander Schauffele defeated Kurt Kitayama by one stroke last year for his third PGA Tour win last season.
Both are back in Scotland for this event, as the winning score is unpredictable. Schauffele’s 7-under was the first time since 1998 that the winning total was in the single digits. On the flip side, Bernd Wiesberger scored 22-under in 2019.
The Renaissance Club is a par 70, measuring 7,237 yards and has a links course feel with pot bunkers and conditions that are both firm and fast.
A big part of this week’s outcome is going to be the weather, as rain and wind are projected to alter the course conditions this week, with temperatures in the low 60s.

Who are the top golfers in the Genesis Scottish Open?
The Genesis Scottish Open feels like a designated event because of how many of the world’s best are in Scotland this week.
Eight of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking and 10 of the top 15 players in the FedEx Cup Standings are competing this week.
In addition, Rickie Fowler is making his first start since his first win in more than four years at the Rocket Mortgage Classic a couple weeks ago. Fowler is also in the field with Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, whom all three visited Wimbledon before preparing for this week’s Genesis Scottish Open. Spieth finished tied for 10th last year at the Genesis Scottish Open and looking to improve on the leaderboard this time around.
Thomas needs a good week at the Genesis Scottish Open. He currently sits at No. 70 in the FedEx Cup Standings, which puts him as the last player who would compete in the FedEx Cup playoffs if the PGA Tour regular season concluded today. The realization also increases because FedEx Cup points are also being given out at the Barbasol Championship with a different 156-man field in addition to those competing at the Genesis Scottish Open.
The top player from the DP World Tour on the Race to Dubai Standings besides Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy is Adrian Meronk, ranked No. 3. Meronk has three victories on the DP World Tour in the last 12 months, including at the DS Automobiles Italian Open in May.

5 players with the best chance to win Genesis Scottish Open
Scottie Scheffler
It is a weekly occurrence for Scottie Scheffler to make this list. In his last six starts, which have all come inside the top 5, only 14 players out of a possible 858 golfers have beaten Scheffler. Although he has not won within those six starts, it tells you how consistent he has been.
The only part of his game that is lacking at the moment is his putting, ranking 131st this season in strokes gained: putting. However, he is picking it up elsewhere from his shots off the tee, from the approach, and around the putting surface with his wedges. Another top 5 finish for Scheffler finally leapfrogs him over Rahm in the FedEx Cup Standings.
Rory McIlroy
Also playing well over the fast five starts is Rory McIlroy, who has five consecutive top-10 finishes, including placing second at the U.S. Open last month. Over his last five starts or 20 rounds, dating back to the PGA Championship, he has 13 rounds in the 60s and has finished every tournament under par.
That is the motivation McIlroy needs to continue to have in his final tune-up before next week’s Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, a course where McIlroy won an Open Championship in 2014.
Patrick Cantlay
Patrick Cantlay comes into the Genesis Scottish Open looking to finish his season on a high note, looking to not only capture his first major next week but to win his second FedEx Cup in three years next month. Last year was Cantlay’s first start at The Renaissance Club, where he finished tied for fourth.
Cantlay has eight top 10s this season, including a fourth-place finish in his most recent start, the Travelers Championship. He has the ability to adapt to any course, and this week is no different as he is also preparing for next week’s Open Championship. Â
Tommy Fleetwood
It felt like Tommy Fleetwood was coming close to being in the winner’s circle a few weeks ago as he finished inside the top five at the U.S. Open. Fleetwood, who is a six-time winner on the DP World Tour, lost in a playoff at the Scottish Open in 2020 and tied with Cantlay last year.
Fleetwood is from Southport, England, which is about 220 miles away from The Renaissance Club. So, he will get the home crowd support over the next couple weeks to fuel him as the attrition kicks in on Sunday.
Xander Schauffele
The reigning champion returns to Genesis Scottish Open looking to defend his title this week. Xander Schauffele, who has not won in nearly a year since his trip to The Renaissance Club, is looking to become the fourth repeat champion this season as he looks for his first major championship next week.
Since the Genesis Scottish Open last year, Schauffele has not missed a cut in 21 events, with 11 top 10s and a runner-up finish, including his first PGA Tour withdrawal at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January. That says how much Schauffele remains in contention on the weekend, nearly once every two tournaments. Â
