The Washington Commanders sale is at the one-yard line, but it reportedly has hit a serious wall that could force things to be turned over on downs.
A Washington Commanders sale is something many fans — and even some NFL owners — have wanted to see for years. Despite the promising future the franchise seemingly had when Daniel Snyder purchased the then-Washington Redskins over two decades ago, his run as a league owner has been disastrous.

Beyond the fact that the organization has only reached the playoffs six times during the 23-year reign of Snyder, the Washington football brand has received several black eyes over the last decade. The most serious of which was the multiple major investigations that were created due to ugly workplace misconduct inside the Washington Commanders organization in recent years.
The latter situation finally pushed Snyder to the edge and out as an NFL owner. After a far longer-than-expected process to sell the team, earlier this year it was revealed that a consortium led by billionaire Josh Harris had come to terms on an agreement to purchase Daniel Snyder’s majority control of the Washington Commanders franchise. All good right? Maybe wrong.
Washington Commanders sale hits ‘serious’ snag
The deal was expected to be finalized and voted on before the start of the 2023 NFL season, however, that no longer seems like the guarantee it once way. On Thursday morning, the Washington Post reported that sources claim negotiations to entangle the NFL from Snyder-related drama have hit “significant” hurdles that are “not just some small snag.”
The Post revealed that part of the complications in conversations “are related at least in part to legal issues pertaining to the leaking of emails that led to the October 2021 resignation of Jon Gruden as coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.” Something that was reported on further here yesteday.
The report adds that the Washington Commanders boss could just be looking for last-minute concessions related to the ongoing Gruden litigation, however, one of the sources did reveal “it’s serious” when it comes to the new hurdles that have put the sale on pause.
