Former Las Vegas Raiders star, and Hall-of-Famer, Warren Sapp recently had some harsh opinions about Josh McDaniels’ approach to being the head coach of his former team.
Suffice it to say, Josh McDaniels’ tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders has gotten off to a very rocky start. After so much hope that the offensive guru of the New England Patriots would bring the franchise back to prominence, it has been the opposite over his first 14 games with the organization.

McDaniels set the stage for an ugly breakup with long-time quarterback Derek Carr in 2022, has frustrated star veterans like Davante Adams and Chandler Jones, and is behind an offense that has underwhelmed over the last two years. In his second stint as a head coach — after previously having the same job with the Denver Broncos — the 47-year-old is still unable to recapture the success of his run in New England.
One person who feels the Raiders were always doomed with McDaniels is Tampa Bay Buccaneers great Warren Sapp. The seven-time Pro Bowler’s final four seasons in the league were spent with the Raiders and he still has an appreciation for the franchise.
Warren Sapp says Las Vegas Raiders head coach using long-dead ‘Patriots Way’ coaching style
That is why when he was asked about McDaniels’ performance during a recent chat with the “What the Football” podcast, Sapp had some harsh critiques of the former Patriots offensive coordinator.
- Josh McDaniels record (Career): 20-32
“We’ve got the wrong guy at the helm. He’s trying to implement something that’s dead. The Patriot Way is dead. [Patriots head coach] Bill Belichick even knows it. Josh McDaniels is trying to recreate something that he doesn’t even have the credentials for. He’s not Bill Belichick.
“We watched him do this in Denver when he drafted Tim Tebow and ran the Broncos into the ground. He’s gonna do the same thing in Las Vegas. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Josh McDaniels is not a good football coach.”
