Seattle Mariners in talks on blockbuster trade that could give them ‘the most powerful rotation in MLB’

The Seattle Mariners have “quietly entered” the chase to trade for Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease.

After a pair of 90-win seasons and a playoff birth in 2022, the Seattle Mariners were unable to overcome the two goliaths in their division — the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros — during the 2023 season. However, with the organization not being a big market club like those teams, they have to be creative in trying to find ways to upgrade the roster to compete next season.

Thus far, Seattle has been fairly quiet outside of a trade that sent Robbie Ray to the San Francisco Giants and brought back former Mariners slugger Mitch Haniger. However, a new report claims they could end up making one of the biggest trades of the offseason if they can complete a deal they are currently working on.

Seattle Mariners surprisingly jump into Dylan Cease chase

On Saturday, USA Today MLB insider Bob Nightengale revealed “The Seattle Mariners have quietly entered trade talks with the Chicago White Sox for ace Dylan Cease, with the White Sox seeking a package centered around young starters Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo.”

Cease has been one of the most talked-about players this offseason with multiple teams linked to talks, including the Baltimore Orioles. However, as the White Sox looked to build their farm system via a trade with the 2022 American League Cy Young candidate, the asking price thus far has been too high for most teams.

Yet, with the Mariners desperate to try and compete with the Rangers and Astros in 2024 and beyond, they might be more willing to be risky to put together one heck of a starting rotation.

“If the Mariners meet the White Sox’s steep asking price, they would have one of the most powerful starting rotations in baseball with Luis Castillo, Cease, Logan Gilbert, and George Kirby,” Nightengale wrote.
