The New York Jets have been without starting quarterback Sam Darnold since he developed mononucleosis ahead of Week 2. But they may soon get him back.
Head coach Adam Gase told reporters Tuesday that Darnold will undergo lab testing Tuesday to determine if his spleen is still enlarged. If he is cleared, he will start, the coach said.
Darnold practiced with the first-team offense all of last week but ultimately was held out after he failed to get medically cleared. The concern is that his spleen has been enlarged, and if he were to get hit he could suffer a ruptured spleen, which is life-threatening.
The Jets enter Week 6 with a record of 0-5. Darnold’s backup, Trevor Siemian, was lost for the season due to an ankle injury, and Luke Falk has been atrocious.
