Jets’ Sam Darnold has morbid quote about playing Sunday

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is inching his way back after missing the past two games with mono.

Recent notes from the Jets indicate that they are hopeful he’ll be able to play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Darnold will have to undergo tests on Friday before a final decision is made.

In talking to the media ahead of the Jets’ Week 5 game, Darnold provided what has to be considered a morbid quote regarding his status.

We’re pretty sure Darnold dying on the football field is the last thing the quarterback and his Jets want. It would put a major damper on things.

The serious nature of Darnold’s illness is something that very few professional athletes have dealt with in recent history.

Sure the former first-round pick was being a bit tongue-in-cheek here, but there has to be some real concern that he’s not ready to take to the field.

At 0-3 on the season, New York is on the brink. In no way does that mean it should rush the young quarterback back on to the field. The team knows this. Darnold obviously understands it, too.
