Chargers starting LT Russell Okung won’t be ready to play in Week 1

Chargers offensive tackle Russell Okung

Los Angeles Chargers starting left tackle Russell Okung has been out of commission all summer due to a serious health issue.

On Thursday evening, general manager Tom Telesco confirmed Okung will not be ready to play in Week 1. He also said it would be a “couple weeks” before the Chargers would have a better update on Okung’s health, per Eric D Williams of ESPN.

Earlier this year, Okung revealed he had suffered a pulmonary embolism, brought about by blood clots. He has been making good progress in his recovery, but this is a serious situation that neither Okung nor the Chargers will take any chances with.

The past two seasons, Okung has started 30 games at tackle for the Chargers, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2017. He signed a lucrative deal in free agency with the team ahead of the 2017 season and still has two years left on his contract.
