Jay Bateman will be hired as Texas A&M’s new defensive coordinator, multiple outlets reported Thursday, while also serving as linebackers coach.

Bateman will replace D.J. Durkin, the Aggies’ defensive coordinator over the previous two seasons before departing for Florida earlier this month.

Bateman and Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko were on the same staff at Richmond in the early 2000s when both were defensive assistants. Bateman, 50, has extensive defensive coordinator experience, serving in the role at Elon, Ball State, Army and North Carolina.

At Army in 2018, Bateman’s defense was ranked No. 9 in the country after giving up 295.5 yards per game. The Black Knights gave up an average of 17.7 points per game that season.
