Report: Browns to give Cody Kessler chance to start in 2017

Cody Kessler

The Cleveland Browns are busy cleaning house when it comes to their quarterbacks. Newly acquired Brock Osweiler looks to be on his way out the door. Meanwhile, the Browns are releasing former No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III.

Now comes this news from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Based on all this, it’s not a surprise that the team is leaking publicly that Cody Kessler will get a chance to start in 2017. At this point, there’s no better internal option for the team.

Kessler was selected by the Browns in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He filled in adequately in eight games as a starter, putting up six touchdowns compared to two interceptions while completing nearly 66 percent of his passes.

The Browns will be an active team to watch as free agency plays out. Cleveland currently possesses two first-round picks, including the No. 1 overall choice. Shopping Brock Osweiler might lead to the Browns adding another quarterback either in the draft or in free agency.

But for now, it seems the Browns are willing to put their faith in Kessler and give him every opportunity to start. It could also signal an end to the team’s hopes of acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots.
