Report: Potential first-round pick Maurice Hurst cleared by cardiologists to play football

Maurice Hurst got some rather shocking news when he went in for his medical testing at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine. It was discovered that he suffered from a heart condition, and he went back home to Michigan for further testing.

Then on Thursday, he got some great news when he reportedly got clearance from his cardiologists to resume playing football. Furthermore, he’ll be doing a full workout Friday during Michigan’s pro day, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This is obviously just fantastic news. Hurst was seen as a player who could potentially be selected in the first round before his heart condition became known. He’s a tremendously disruptive defensive tackle with good size (6-foot-2, 282-pounds) who racked up 31 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks during his three years playing for the Wolverines.

It remains to be seen if his health will be seen as a red flag by teams in the draft. His heart condition was said to be similar to that of Nick Fairley’s, who was cleared out of college but whose career in the NFL is likely over now.
