Rumors have continued to persist that Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni could be out of a job following a meltdown of epic proportions to conclude their 2023 season.
After starting 10-1, Philadelphia finished the regular season by losing five of its final six. The defending NFC champions were then destroyed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs by the score of 32-9.
The backdrop here includes multiple reports that the head coach had lost his locker room. The disastrous end to the season suggested that a coaching change could be in store in Philadelphia.
It does not look like this is going to be the case. Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that both Sirianni and Eagles general manager Howie Roseman are reaching out to individuals around the league to potentially fill coordinator jobs for Philadelphia.
“Both Eagles GM Howie Roseman and HC Nick Sirianni have been reaching out to available NFL coaches and coordinators, as well as coaching agents across the league to evaluate potential coordinator candidates to join their coaching staff as they plan for the 2024 season.”
Report on Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching situation
Roseman wouldn’t be working directly with Sirianni if the GM had any intention of moving on from the head coach. This is the clearest indication yet that Sirianni’s job is safe.
Much like Mike McCarthy with the division-rival Dallas Cowboys, it sure looks like Sirianni will be a lame-duck head coach next season. Further struggles like what we saw toward the end of the regular season and in the playoffs will have him on the hot set from the get once the 2024 NFL season starts.
As for the decision to retain Sirianni, it’s not yet known how this is going to be met in the Eagles’ locker room. What we do know is that his reputation has taken a hit around the league less than a calendar year after leading Philadelphia to the Super Bowl.
“I think they would. They’re obsessed with winning. Howie [Roseman] and that owner are always trying to get better. The staff is getting picked apart, and some of the [stuff] Sirianni says makes me shake my head. There’s going to be some tough conversations coming,” unnamed NFL GM on Sirianni.
Another layer to this report is the fact that Philadelphia will now likely be looking for a new offensive and defensive coordinator. That’s something to watch for moving forward.
