The New York Yankees placed infielder DJ LeMahieu on the team’s paternity list Tuesday.
Per league guidelines, LeMahieu can miss up to three games without costing the team a roster spot, but he is allowed to return sooner if desired.
The move was made ahead of Tuesday night’s home game against the Toronto Blue Jays, with the Yankees having won six consecutive games.
The 32-year-old LeMahieu, a three-time All-Star, has posted a .260/.347/.347 line in 44 games this season split between second base, first base, third base and designated hitter. This marks a drop in production from his stellar 2020 campaign, in which he won his second career batting title by hitting .364 in 50 games with a league-best .421 on-base percentage.
LeMahieu and his wife, Jordan, are expected to have their first child Tuesday, according to manager Aaron Boone. In addition, first baseman Luke Voit and wife, Tori, plan to deliver their first child on Friday, on the heels of second baseman Rougned Odor and his wife having a baby girl last week.
