New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers value reach new heights ahead of Opening Day 2023

Despite some volatility when it comes to some MLB teams and their broadcast rights, the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and the rest of the league’s teams saw their overall value increase this year.

When Diamond Sports filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, the regional broadcasting situation for 42 teams across the NBA, NHL, and MLB became murky at best. However, for the NBA and NHL, both of those leagues’ current seasons are coming close to their finish and the news is less dire, while MLB is readying to kick off their 2023 season next week.

Nevertheless, the turmoil in the regional broadcasting world did not hurt the value of the teams affected by Diamond Sports going under. On Wednesday, Forbes published new valuations on the 32 teams across the MLB, and average team value increased by 12% before the start of the 2023 MLB season.

However, three specific organizations had the biggest jump in value, and unsurprisingly they are a few of the most storied franchises in the sport’s history. The New York Yankees saw their value increase a whopping 18% to $7.1 billion. Aaron Judge’s historic 2022 season and deciding to re-sign with the team this winter likely helped in that jump.

The Los Angeles Dodgers also saw an 18% jump to a value of $4.8 billion, while the Yankees’ greatest rival the Boston Red Sox saw a 15% value jump to $4.5 billion. Of the three franchises, the more inexpensive Red Sox roster last season led to over $70 million in operating income. While both the Yankees and Dodgers’ operating incomes were well under $20 million.

MLB revenue increased by 7.8% to $10.3 billion over the last year. Most of that came from a massive 64% overall increase in ticket revenue, including from the 2022 postseason and spring training. Below you can find the top 10 most valuable teams in MLB.
