- Update: The New York Mets have designated veteran reliever Jorge Lopez for assignment after the incident during Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lopez had some harsh words for the team after their latest loss, leaidng to the front office making this move. It came after a team meeting betwen Mets players.
Things are absolutely spiraling for the New York Mets. Since starting the season with a 12-8 record, Carlos Mendoza’s squad has gone 10-24.
Frustration. Injuries. Sluggish play. Whatever way you want to articulate it, what we’re seeing in the Big Apple is a disaster class right now.
That continued at home Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. First, it was star Pete Alonso who had to exit the game early after being hit on the hand by a ball.
With New York down 9-3 in the eighth inning, veteran reliever Jorge Lopez got into it with third-base umpire Ramon De Jesus. We have absolutely no idea what words were exchanged. But Lopez was quickly run from the game.

As Lopez was making his way to the dug out, he threw his glove into the stands and in the direction of fans. It was not a great look.
Again, we’re not exactly sure what transpired between the two. Those calling the game were equally confused.
It makes perfect sense that frustration would be the name of the game in New York right now. Seeing your star first baseman exit in the opening frame only adds to that frustration.
Something needs to change.
As for Alonso, there is no further updates on his status. He’s undergoing more tests.
