NASCAR: Ty Dillon linked to big move to Spire Motorsports in 2023

Ty Dillon is being heavily linked to Spire Motorsports to drive the No. 77 car in the NASCAR Cup Series for the 2023 season, per multiple reports.

Spire Motorsports is set to reveal its lineup for the 2023 NASCAR season on Tuesday, October 18 and there have been a few names linked to the ride, such as Austin Hill, Josh Berry, and its current drivers.

However, Ty Dillon is being heavily linked to the No. 77 car as the organization is set to announce its lineups soon, according to multiple reports. Dillon, 30, is scheduled to be a free agent after mutually parting ways with Petty GMS Motorsports.

The 30-year-old spent one year out of the NASCAR Cup Series after Germain Racing closed its shop but moved back to the division with GMS Racing before it merged with Richard Petty Motorsports.

Dillon’s career has been far from easy ever since he reached the NASCAR Cup Series after he declined an opportunity to drive the No. 8 car for Richard Childress Motorsports before his rookie season and this year is another taste of it.

The 30-year-old driver has one top-10 finish and a 22.1 average finishing position in the No. 42 car for Petty GMS Motorsports. Dillon’s teammate Erik Jones has one win, three top-5 finishes, and 13 top-10 finishes.

It is very obvious that Dillon has not been performing at the same level as Jones. The hope for Petty GMS Motorsports is that Noah Gragson, driver of its No. 42 car in 2023, will have an improvement in performance.

This explains why the current driver of the No. 42 car will not be in the ride next season. However, as stated above, Dillon is being heavily linked to the No. 77 car for Spire Motorsports as silly season moves forward.

If this were to happen and Dillon becomes a full-time driver for the organization, there would be 34 full-time drivers out of the 36 charters with only Rick Ware Racing and Live Fast Motorsports having part-time drivers.

As for the fit, it would be a great one for both sides. It would allow Dillon to continue running full-time in Cup Series while Spire Motorsports picks up a driver who has a past of not wrecking much equipment.

Obviously, the organization will not be able to field top-25 entries but it is still a work in progress to grow. The No. 7 car is 32nd while the No. 77 car is 33rd in the owner’s championship.

Dillon would have better options available in the NASCAR Xfinity and Truck Series so if it does come true, he would be passing on any notable rides, such as Big Machine Racing and Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Either way, Dillon’s future plans will be announced soon as he already has reached an agreement for next season.
