As student-athletes return to campus in preparation for the upcoming fall season, universities are now dealing with the realities of the coronavirus pandemic. Now, Boise State University became the latest school with multiple student-athletes to test positive for COVID-19.
‘Multiple’ Boise State athletes test positive for coronavirus
Just days after the NCAA allowed student-athletes to return to campus for voluntary workouts, rampant testing for the coronavirus has quickly shown how it has spread across the United States.
Boise State announced in a statement on Tuesday, via the Idaho Statesman, that multiple student-athletes have tested positive for the coronavirus. While the school would confirm multiple individuals were placed in isolation, the university can’t indicate which sports they play due to privacy laws.
Voluntary workouts started on Monday, per the Idaho Statesman. The move came after 40 athletes underwent testing for COVID-19, but the results weren’t disclosed publicly until Tuesday.
Currently, Boise State’s football and women’s soccer athletes are known to have come back to campus.
Alabama, Oklahoma State among schools with multiple coronavirus cases
The outbreak of COVID-19 led to cases across the country, including at top programs. The University of Alabama announced at least five players tested positive and reports estimated nearly 50 could go into quarantine.
Oklahoma State’s football team had multiple players test positive, including star linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga. Additionally, seven student-athletes at Arkansas State and three athletes at Marshall University were confirmed to have the coronavirus.
There is still plenty of time for football players to clear quarantine and return to practice to get in shape for the upcoming season. However, as the Big 12 commissioner warned, there will still likely be disruptions to the 2020 college football season.
