NBA GM thinks Miami Heat among 5 teams that will pursue Dillon Brooks in free agency

An anonymous NBA general manager believes the Miami Heat and three other contending teams could make a strong push for 3-and-D ace Dillon Brooks in NBA free agency this summer.

After six strong seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, Dillon Brooks saw his tenure with the organization come to an unceremonious end earlier this week. After becoming a key member of their rotation and one of their top defensive stoppers, his bold personality, headline-making comments, and inconsistent shooting became too much for the team to continue with.

While many fans know Dillon Brooks for a playing style that led to confrontations with future Hall-of-Famers like Draymond Green and Lebron James, it could be argued he was a hidden gem on the Memphis Grizzlies roster over the last few seasons. While his three-point percentage dipped over the last two seasons and he shot a career-worse 40% from the field this season, he still has value around the league.

Brooks is only a couple of seasons removed from averaging 17 points in 67 games, and over 18 points in 32 games last season. However, there is no denying his high-level ability as a defender and disruptor. Two qualities title-contending teams could always use, and this is why he is likely to get a good look from teams like the Miami Heat this summer.

Miami Heat record (’22-’23): 44-38

On Wednesday, Heavy.com NBA insider Sean Deveney got thoughts from an anonymous NBA general manager on the situation between Brooks and the Grizzlies, and the league decision-maker offered up five teams they believe could target the forward after the NBA playoffs come to a close.

“The Heat would be a team like that, they could even start him and they can sell him on the culture there. The Boston Celtics depending on what happens with Grant (Williams), that would be a spot. Phoenix Suns, they will be looking for role players and Brooks could be a starter there, too. Same with the Cleveland Cavaliers, they need a wing.

“Dallas Mavericks , he is the kind of guy they are desperate for. Teams like that have to make a call on a guy like him.”
