LOOK: Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson joins George Floyd protests in Oakland

George Floyd protests

The Golden State Warriors season will officially be over once the NBA finalizes its plans for a return to action.

Though, there’s a lot more going on around the United States than getting live sports back amid the ongoing global pandemic. The past week-plus has been filled with widespread protests stemming from the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week.

George Young protests

As protests continue to ramp up around the country following Floyd’s death at the hands of a now-former Minneapolis police officer, sports figures are getting involved in a big way. That now includes three-time NBA champion Klay Thompson of the Warriors.

It is rather interesting to see Mr. Thompson out there taking part in said protests. He’s not of the activist mind that defines Warriors head coach Steve Kerr and others within the organization. It goes to show us just how much Young’s murder has impacted the broader American society, even a usually quiet and reserved Mr. Thompson.

The scene of Thompson and at least one of his Warriors teammates protesting in downtown Oakland is also full of optics. It was two years ago this month that they celebrated their third title in four seasons at the very same Lake Merritt location.

As of right now, everything seems to be peaceful in Oakland.

Golden State Warriors season

This comes on the very same day that the Warriors’ season has unofficially come to an end. With the 2019-20 NBA season having been suspended back on March 11 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the powers to be are planning for a July 31 return to action.

The five-time defending Western Conference champion Warriors will not be one of the 22 teams returning to action in Orlando. They boast a league-worst 15-50 record. In all, it was a wasted season for Thompson and his Warriors. He did not play in a single game after after suffering a torn ACL during the 2018-19 NBA Finals a year ago this month.
