James Harden ‘torn’ between these two teams in NBA free agency

James Harden could be on the move again this summer, just two years and 76 games after joining the Philadelphia 76ers via trade. This time around, Harden is expected to enter free agency after likely opting out of the final year of his $35 million contract.

The idea is that Harden will be able to command much more money not only for 2023 but also gain more long-term financial security with a multi-year contract. Harden, despite turning 34 later this summer, has still proven to be an extremely effective player, as shown by leading the NBA in assists while still scoring 21 points per game last season. In turn, the 10-time All-Star will receive plenty of interest on the open market.

But which teams appeal to Harden? After all, unlike when he was drafted or even traded three times, now the three-time scoring champ gets to pick which team he signs with.

Shams Charania is as plugged as they come, and the NBA insider recently had this to say about Harden’s pending free agency:

“I really think that he’s torn with the prospect of staying in Philadelphia or moving on to Houston potentially, and returning back to his home. And that’s where his roots are, his family is there”.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Charania’s report. These are the same two teams that have been linked to the two-time NBA assist champ all along. But it’s still fascinating because both teams are on opposite ends of the spectrum, with the 76ers already being competitive and the Rockets hoping to get there.

Then again, money talks. It’s possible the Rockets are preparing to back up the Brinks truck for their former superstar.

Houston Rockets tab James Harden as top target this offseason

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers at Cleveland Cavaliers

According to league sources who spoke to Kelly Iko in late May, the Houston Rockets are entering the offseason with James Harden as their top priority. After hiring coach Ime Udoka, Houston hopes for a quick turnaround and to put their days of winning just 22 games or less in the rearview mirror.

Harden would certainly help their effort, providing valued veteran leadership on a roster full of youth, with Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and Jabari Smith Jr. all 21 years old or younger. But how quickly would this roster be able to contend for a title? Harden, who is still chasing his first ring, may value a more competitive situation instead. It should be a fun summer across the basketball landscape.
