The Denver Broncos were down 28-7 late in the third quarter of Saturday night’s game against the Detroit Lions. Russell Wilson and Co. were driving in an attempt to make this a two-touchdown game.
That’s when officials on hand inside Ford Field decided to take it upon themselves and rob the Broncos of a much-needed touchdown.
Fullback Michael Burton scored from one-yard out to make this one a game. Unfortunately, the John Hussey-led officiating crew called a rare offensive offsides on Broncos center Quinn Meinerz.
The problem? He was nowhere near close to offsides before snapping the ball. The video and still don’t lie. Not even close.
Downright pathetic. You can’t have officials playing this type of a role in the outcome of a game. Sure, the Broncos were facing an uphill climb in the first place. But taking six off the board due to a ridiculous call is not going to cut it.
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton was rightfull angry at the officials after the call was made before he opted for a field goal to make it a 28-10 game. For some reason, a lot of his anger was directed at quarterback Russell Wilson.
We saw a similar situation unfold during last week’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. Kansas City seemingly scored what would have been the game-winning touchdown before Kadarius Toney was called offsides.
Ultimately, Buffalo came away with the season-saving win. For their part, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes found themselves fined for their reactions to the call.
