Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was non-committal about head coach Mike McCarthy following their blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card Playoffs.
It led to widespread speculation that McCarthy could be out of a job after four seasons in Big D. Apparently, that’s not going to be the case.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Dallas has made the decision to retain McCarthy for the 2024 NFL season.
This has to be considered a stunning decision given what we saw transpire Sunday evening in Dallas. The Cowboys found themselves down 48-16 in the fourth quarter before two garbage-time touchdowns. Those 48 points represented the most that the Cowboys have given up in postseason franchise history.
Continued playoff struggles seemed to suggest that Jones was about to make a move at the head coach position. McCarthy boasts a 1-3 playoff record as the Cowboys’ head coach. They have not earned a spot in the NFC Championship Game since all the way back in 1996.

“There’s nothing set on that. What I had planned to do was be with him tomorrow going over how we played today and getting ready for the coming week. That’s what was on the agenda. Tomorrow, my agenda will be to dismiss the team.”
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Mike McCarthy after Sunday’s loss
It seems as if McCarthy did enough in that meeting to save his job.
Jones was seen extremely frustrated as the ‘Boys were being blown out at home on Sunday, leading to speculation that he was about to make a move.
Instead, McCarthy will enter the final season of his contract as a lame-duck head coach in Dallas. Meanwhile, more questions will be raised about the Cowboys’ ability to do their thing on the field when it counts the most.
