Chicago Bears reportedly clear up massive amount of cap space by cutting pair of Pro Bowlers

As the Chicago Bears look to retool their roster for 2024, the organization made a pair of major moves on Wednesday that will free up a huge amount of cap space for trades and NFL free agency.

After starting the season 3-8, the Bears and quarterback Justin Fields had a strong finish as they won four of their last six. The improved play gave fans hope that with the right moves in free agency and the 2024 NFL Draft, the team could be a serious contender for a playoff spot next season.

Today, the organization took a pair of bold steps toward making major changes so they are in the postseason next year. On Wednesday afternoon, NFL Media league insider Ian Rapoport reported that “The Bears have released veterans [safety] Eddie Jackson and [guard] Cody Whitehair, who had combined salary cap numbers of roughly $32M. Even more cap space for Chicago.”

The organization should now have a whopping $81.3 million available to use in trades or free-agent signings starting in March.

Chicago Bears rumors: Who could the team target this offseason?

The Chicago Bears have several holes to now fill heading into the offseason, including at safety and on the offensive line after cutting one-time All-Pro Jackson and former Pro Bowler Whitehair. However, there is a strong chance the team looks to boost the offense for either Fields or the quarterback they take with the top pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Cowboys and Dolphins veteran Connor Williams could be a possible target this offseason to bolster the tackle spot in 2024. Another option could be trading for Giants running back Saquon Barkley who is looking to land his first big contract. The combo of Barkley and Fields could be dynamite if the team holds on to their incumbent quarterback.

Other options might be a trade for superstar receiver Davante Adams or signing Tampa Bay Buccaneers great Mike Evans in NFL free agency. After today’s moves, the organization has more than enough money to add any of the above stars to the offense in 2024.
