Up by 10 points early in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV, the San Francisco 49ers intercepted Patrick Mahomes for the second time and appeared to ice the game. After the interception, the entire 49ers defense posed for a group photo in the end zone as the players celebrated.
Seemingly in control of the game, the 49ers went on to give up 21 unanswered points in an epic collapse they won’t soon forget. Even worse, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker says that the celebration was the moment that propelled Kansas City to victory.
Speaking on NFL Total Access Friday, Butker said that the team celebration “helped to our advantage,” noting “that they were celebrating so much and I think they probably let their guard down a little bit.”
“When you have Patrick Mahomes and our offense, you know we’re gonna score quick — which we did. Defense did a great job and before they knew it, we’re up four and then we’re up 11. But that was kinda sticking in my mind.”
There’s no doubt that the interception was a turning point in the game. The Chiefs came roaring back thanks in large part to some magical stuff from Mr. Mahomes, and the 49ers will have to live with their regret.
