It sure looks like Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon’s holdout will last through the start of the season.
Fresh off reports that the Chargers have granted the Pro Bowler permission to seek a trade comes this report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler indicating that Gordon does not plan to report in time for Week 1.
Missing regular-season games always seemed to be in the cards here. That was taken to a whole new level over the weekend when the Chargers indicated that they’ll table extension talks until the end of the season.
Meanwhile, keen observers of Gordon’s social media activity noted that he started following the Eagles, Falcons, Raiders and 49ers on Instagram over the weekend. Read into that what you will.
What we do know is that there’s a good chance Gordon has played his final game as a member of the Chargers. The expectation here has to be that Los Angeles will find a trade partner ahead of Sunday’s season opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
Gordon, 26, has put up 4,372 yards an 38 touchdowns over the past three seasons. That’s top-five production from the running back position. And he wants to be paid like it.
