There’s been a lot of debate about who deserves to be the NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2017-18 season, especially since Ben Simmons was drafted ahead of the 2016-17 season. Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz added to the conversation by wearing an Adidas hoodie ahead of Tuesday night’s game that featured the definition of “rookie.”

The shirt reads, “Rookie: An athlete, playing in his or her first season, as a member of a professional sports team. ”
Now, it’s important to note that Simmons didn’t play in a single game last season. So, regardless of when he was drafted, he is a rookie this season. Period.
And if we’re being honest, what Simmons has done heading down the home stretch — no offense to Mitchell or any other rookie — makes him a shoo-in to win the award.
