Despite struggling to the tune of 2-of-8 passing for 20 yards in the team’s preseason opener, Mike Glennon will likely be the Chicago Bears’ Week 1 starter.
Head coach John Fox indicated following Glennon’s disastrous performance that the Bears’ depth chart remains unchanged. This came after the free agent signing threw a pick-six and boasted a zero quarterback rating in the loss to the Denver Broncos.
Now comes this report from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune noting that Glennon is a “strong favorite” to open the season as Chicago’s starter.
“I wouldn’t rule out the possibility (Mitch) Trubisky starts in Week 1 against the Falcons on Sept. 10, but I’d consider Glennon to be the strong favorite based on everything the Bears continue to say,” Biggs reported.
While Glennon was out there laying an egg, Trubisky dominated in his NFL preseason debut. The rookie No. 2 overall pick completed 18-of-25 passes for 166 yards with a touchdown and zero picks. He also added 38 yards on three rush attempts.
Look for Fox and Co. to give Trubisky more play with the first-team offense. As Biggs noted, that entire unit struggled last week against Denver’s starters. It isn’t necessarily too much of a surprise given that the Broncos boast one of the top defenses in the NFL.
Even then, there’s little reason to believe Trubisky should not be given an opportunity to play with the ones. But short of him continuing to dazzle, it looks like Glennon will be under center Week 1 against the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons.
