Report: 49ers to fire HC Chip Kelly, GM Trent Baalke in ‘sweeping changes’

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly set for more change, which will hopefully give the franchise hope in the years to come. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the 49ers will fire Chip Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke after a terrible season in which the team has won just two games heading into Week 17.

“Meetings are expected to occur as early as postgame Sunday, and no later than Monday, to determine their ultimate fates. But both Kelly and Baalke are said to know that their time in San Francisco is coming to an end.”

These two moves will reportedly be the key ones in what will be “sweeping changes” throughout the organization.

We assume assistant general manager Tom Gamble has a shot to stick around, but at this point it’s unclear just how far these “sweeping changes” will go.

It very well could mean the 49ers are finally ready to bring in an old hat like Mike Holmgren or Mike Shanahan to run the show. Both men have been tied to the team in the past couple of years, but in the end the 49ers went with Band-Aid fixes Jim Tomsula and Kelly, instead, hanging onto Baalke as well.

That change is needed is not even a question. The 49ers have tanked the past two years after parting ways with Jim Harbaugh, the only positive influence in the franchise since the mid-2000s.

Will the franchise keep Colin Kaepernick, or will he bolt? Will they take a quarterback in Round 1? Will they shoot for pass rusher Myles Garrett? It’s going to be interesting to see what happens next.
