Former Washington wide receiver John Ross is one of the most electric prospects to enter the NFLÂ in a while, but some teams won’t even consider drafting him, according to a report.
“There are some teams that have pushed him either down their boards or off their boards because of injuries,” Mike Mayock said in a media teleconference, per Chase Goodbread of NFL.com. “He’s had surgery on his shoulder, he’s had surgery on both knees, and he’s got a small frame. So the durability is a big issue with him right now.”
Ross was unarguably one of the most productive receivers in the nation last season with the Huskies. He caught 81 passes for 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also routinely made top cornerbacks look silly using a potent combination of raw speed, blazing quickness and precise route running, resulting in plays like this one.
Then at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine, Ross did what some wondered might never happen when he broke Chris Johnson’s combine record running the 40 in 4.22 seconds (watch here).
Despite some teams viewing his injury history as a reason to avoid taking Ross at all, the receiver is still expected to land somewhere in the first round. Mayock explained why he’s a “huge fan,” despite
“I love that he could step in Day 1 and help a team as both a return guy and as a receiver,” Mayock added. “He puts the ball in the end zone; I’m a huge fan of John Ross.”
This scribe is with Mayock here. Ross has the potential to become the next DeSean Jackson, except he’s faster and more explosive off the line. That’s a scary thought.
