Major League Baseball suspended New York Yankees reliever Jimmy Cordero for the rest of the season on Wednesday for violating the league’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.
Cordero, 31, was placed on the restricted list and will not count against the Yankees’ 40-man roster. He will not get paid the remainder of his $720,000 salary for 2023.
MLB reached the discipline after an investigation, the details of which were not released.
“Cordero will participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program supervised by the Joint Policy Board,” the league said in a release.
The Yankees released a statement shortly after the punishment was handed down by the league.
“The Yankees are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero. There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” the Yankees said in their statement.
The Yankees did not immediately announce a replacement for Cordero on the 26-man roster.
Cordero finishes the 2023 season, his first with the Yankees, 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 31 appearances (one start).
The right-hander is 6-7 with a 4.36 ERA in 114 career appearances (one start) with Washington (2018), Toronto (2019), the Chicago White Sox (2019-20) and Yanks.
Cordero missed the 2021 season with Tommy John surgery and signed a minor league deal with the Yankees ahead of the 2022 season. He spent all of 2022 at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
