Tanaka, who is 12-4 with a 2.51 ERA in 18 starts this season, has helped hold together a New York Yankees team that simply doesn’t seem to be legitimate AL contenders this season. The rookie from Japan has struggled in each of his last two starts, giving up nine runs and 19 hits in 13.2 innings.
There may very well be some unfortunate news coming from New York, which wouldn’t bode well for its postseason chances. The possibility exists that Tanaka has suffered a UCL injury. If so, it would be just the latest in a string of shoulder issues for MLB pitchers in a season that seems to be defined by said injuries. Let’s hope Tanaka’s MRI gives us some good news.
For now, Tanaka is headed to the DL.
#Yankees manager Joe Girardi just announced that Masahiro Tanaka will be placed on the 15-day DL with elbow inflammation.
