In news that’s about as shocking as the sun rising in the morning, the Washington Wizards are reportedly set to fire head coach Randy Wittman after the season comes to a conclusion Wednesday evening.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, the expectation is that Wittman will be fired sometime on Thursday.
“Randy (Wittman) is probably 99 percent going to be fired on Thursday morning,” Windhorst said on The Tony Kornheiser Show on Monday.
Washington enters the final two games of the regular season having already been eliminated from playoff contention. It needs to win both outings in order to avoid a losing record.
This is a mighty big regression from a team that had earned a trip to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in each of the past two seasons.
And with a boatload of money to spend in free agency, Washington likely wants to go in a different direction.
That sexy new hiring could easily propel the team into the mix for one of the top free agents out there, especially D.C. native Kevin Durant.
Wittman did good to bring the Wizards back to relevance back east. Unfortunately, his offensive scheme an questionable usage of the team’s rotation have been major issues during what has been a disastrous 2015-16 campaign.
That’s likely going to lead to the coach’s ousting shortly after Washington’s season finale against the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday evening.
