Elena Delle Donne is one of the WNBA’s best players. Since entering the WNBA in 2013, the 30-year-old Delle Donne is a six-time All-Star and a five-time All-WNBA selection (four times on the 1st team and once on the 2nd). She is also two-time MVP and helped the Washington Mystics win their first WNBA championship in 2019. Lastly, she’s the first player in WNBA history to join the 50/40/90 club – hitting 50% from the field, 40% from 3-point land and 90% of the free-throw line.

If Delle Donne played in 2020 or get a medical exemption from the WNBA, she would get the league-maximum $215,000. Delle Donne joins five other players – Skylar Diggins-Smith, Brittney Griner, DeWanna Bonner, Sue Bird and Emma Meesseman – in getting paid the league-maximum.

Delle Donne is clearly an accomplished player. But because of her Lyme Disease, she is at odds with the WNBA doctors.
Recently, she said she takes 64 pills a day in order to manage the symptoms of Lyme Disease. After talking to her personal physician about playing, she was advised not to play in order to preserve her health.
However, the WNBA’s doctors don’t agree. Now, she has to decide whether to sacrifice her health for a paycheck or forego the 2020 WNBA season for her safety.
