The Vancouver Whitecaps acquired midfielder Sebastian Berhalter from the Columbus Crew on Friday for up to $100,000 in general allocation money.
The Crew receives $50,000 in GAM in 2022 and would receive an additional $50,000 if performance incentives are met.
“Sebastian is a young player we’ve identified within the league who adds depth to our defensive midfield position as he brings high intensity in the press, strong work ethic and defensive contributions,” Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a statement. “He will be added to our supplemental roster as we will continue to keep the door open for a more senior player at this position.”
The 20-year-old Berhalter was loaned to Austin FC for the 2021 season and had one assist in 18 matches (five starts).
The previous season, he was scoreless in nine appearances (four starts) for Columbus.
Berhalter is the son of U.S. men’s national team coach Gregg Berhalter.
