From one former National League MVP to another. Just two days after Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich was lost for the season to a fractured kneecap, his teammates were on the field paying homage to the veteran.
That included fellow former NL MVP Ryan Braun, who was wearing Yelich’s jersey under his own Thursday against the Miami Marlins.
Like clockwork, Braun homered off Marlins starter Caleb Smith in the third inning.
In the midst of yet another MVP-caliber season, Yelich’s injury was a major blow to a Brewers team still in contention for a playoff spot.
How the team reacts over the final couple weeks of the regular season will be telling. If Braun’s homer is any indication, Milwaukee might use Yelich’s injury as some sort of a rallying call.
Milwaukee entered Thursday’s action with a 77-68 record and tied with the division-rival Chicago Cubs for the second wild card spot in the National League.
