The San Francisco 49ers’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday afternoon couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for the road team.
San Francisco forced a three-and-out on its first defensive series of the game.
Then, overcoming a lackluster Week 1 performance, embattled quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo connected with Marquise Goodwin on a beautiful 38-yard touchdown.
49ers’ receivers have struggled a great deal during the Kyle Shanahan era. Goodwin himself is coming off an injury-plagued and unproductive 2018 season.
This certainly is a good initial sign for a 49ers team looking to start the season with consecutive road wins for the first time since 1989.
On the other side, what exactly was going on in coverage for the Bengals? Goodwin had no one within 10 yards of him when he walked into the end zone. That’s just ugly.
