The Washington Huskies pulled off a sweet trick play on a kickoff return against Oregon Saturday but were penalized for being a bit too tricky.
Following an early Oregon touchdown, the Huskies thought they had a 48-yard return after Chico McClatcher caught a long cross-field lateral and ran upfield for a huge gain.
However, the refs flagged Washington on the play because McClatcher had been laying on the ground in the end zone to blend in, and apparently that’s illegal.
Here’s the play, and a thorough explanation by Bill Lemonnier, who breaks down the relatively new rule.
It was a lot of fun to watch, but apparently in college football there’s a certain level of trickiness that is just not allowed.
