The Kansas City Chiefs are hanging on by a thread against the New England Patriots, thanks to their quarterback, Alex Smith.
Kansas City was trailing by 15, facing a third-and-six deep in their own territory. Failure to pick up a first down would likely have led to the Patriots getting the ball back and Tom Brady with good field position is not a good thing for opponents.
Alex Smith did everything he could to be sure that didn’t happen.

As good as Smith’s evasiveness and throw were, Jason Avant making that catch against good coverage also needs to be commended. It would have been very easy to drop that pass, but he held it through the ground and picked up a huge first down.
The Chiefs would go on to score a touchdown on the possession, converting a fourth down later in the drive. They now trail 21-13 and still have a long way to go, but thanks to Smith’s brilliant play, Kansas City now has a chance.
