Warriors end losing streak in San Antonio, tie Bulls win record

Nelson Chenault, USA Today Sports

The Golden State Warriors just made history in San Antonio on Sunday night. The defending champs defeated the Spurs 92-86 for the team’s 72nd win of the season, matching the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for the most wins in a single season in the history of the NBA.

This win also ends Golden State’s 33-game regular season losing streak in San Antonio and puts an end to the Spurs hopes of becoming the first team in Association history to go undefeated at home.

There are a lot of other records involved here. Golden State’s 34-7 record on the road is now the best in Association history, besting the aforementioned Bulls.

The game started out slowly on the offensive end for both sides, as the score was tied 35 at the half.

Led by Stephen Curry’s 16 third quarter points, Golden State then picked it up a great deal offensively in the second half. Overall, the MVP scored 37 points on 13-of-22 shooting, including 4-of-9 from three point range.

Considering Curry had struggled more in San Antonio than any other road venue in the NBA, this was a much-needed performance. That’s only magnified with the likelihood that the two will meet in the Western Conference Finals.

More so than matching the Bulls record with 72 wins, the Warriors needed to prove to themselves that they could win in San Antonio. After all, the team’s last regular season win there was back in February of 1997 with Dominique Wilkins and Chris Mullin going up against one another.

What makes this performance so amazing is the fact that it came after a late-season back-to-back that saw Golden State pull off a narrow win over the Grizzlies in Memphis on Saturday.

If the Warriors are able to beat those very same Grizzlies in Oakland on Wednesday, they will be alone in the record books with a 73-9 record.

That’s simply stunning.
